First Why Then How

If you watched the Simon Sinek Ted Talk, you know he says we should start with WHY, then HOW, then finally WHAT. In other words:

WHY: We believe in the power of extraordinary people working together in a great environment to accomplish important, lasting change.

HOW: We do this by leveraging strong leadership, effective project management, and a commitment to our core values.

WHAT: BPM consultants lead teams to deliver complex technical projects at pharma and medical device companies. We typically lead teams that consist of client experts, contract resources, and other BPM experts. The projects range from R&D to manufacturing asset delivery to quality improvement and business process excellence.

In Why We Do What We Do, I described BPM’s WHY in further detail. In this post, I will talk about HOW we do what we do.

Embracing Change: The Key to Business Success

Change is not just a necessity for businesses; it’s the lifeblood that keeps them thriving. When the right people come together, change becomes not only possible but also successful and lasting. Imagine a world where change is not feared but eagerly anticipated. A world where people wake up excited to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time, knowing that their efforts will lead to job satisfaction and lasting impact.

The Power of Leadership

At the heart of successful change is strong, skilled leadership. We believe that a capable leader can make all the difference in completing projects on time and within budget. Whether a project is large or small, complex or straightforward, it stands the best chance of success with a good leader at the helm. Even projects that seem doomed to fail can be turned around by a strong, skilled leader.

The most critical projects demand the best leadership. When failure is not an option, when success is imperative, the best leader and the best team are your best hope.

Ensuring Lasting Change

Effective project management and organizational change management (OCM) are crucial to ensuring that change sticks. Every project creates something new—a new asset, system, or way of working. However, the value of these new creations is realized only if they are delivered on time, at the right cost, and if the people who use them understand and believe in their value.

If a project takes too long, costs too much, or leaves team members and stakeholders demoralized, people will revert to the old ways. A strong, skilled project manager leading a good team can leverage project management and OCM principles to ensure the project is completed on time, within budget, and leads to healthy, engaged adoption. This approach ensures that the change is not only implemented but also embraced and sustained.

Our Guiding Principles

Our work is guided by core values: People First, Relationships Matter, Service to a Greater Cause, and a commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). We believe in leveraging the values, traits, and skills that define extraordinary people and create a great environment.

We are continuously building and strengthening our processes and tools to ensure our people have what they need to do their best work. Our journey began with a focus on our people—the employees of BPM. By taking great care of our employees, we believe they will take great care of our customers.

Investing in Our People

Our leadership team has dedicated countless hours to improving internal processes and tools. Here are just a few of these:

  • Partnering with a Professional Employment Organization to offer big company benefits at our small, growing firm
  • Implementing a fair and equitable compensation program
  • Providing generous benefits and a shared success model with a bonus program
  • Offering extensive DEIB training and strategy development
  • Focusing on growth planning, performance management, and development
  • Establishing a clear reporting structure and a mentoring program
  • Holding culture development meetings and offering a learning and development program
  • Providing tuition reimbursement

Enhancing Client Delivery

We also prioritize client delivery processes and tools so that the client experience is consistent, and results are predictable. Some of the client delivery processes include:

  • A robust Project Methodology and Delivery process
  • Resource Management by Smartsheet
  • Smartsheet for project tracking and internal process automation
  • Strengthening Account Management practices

Be the change

By focusing on strong leadership, effective project management, and a commitment to our core values, we are not just embracing change—we are driving it. Together, we can create a world where change is welcomed and leads to lasting, positive impact.
